The Many Shapes of Diamonds

It is November – the month in which we celebrate Thanksgiving. There is always so much to be thankful for in our lives. I am so grateful for each of you who support me in my very happy business of bringing joy to people. I love what I do. I love sharing in your stories. I feel blessed.

This month we are talking about the many shapes of diamonds. I hope you enjoy.

Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

The Many Shapes of Diamonds

Round

Round cut - Classic most common shape with 58 facets. The symmetry of the round shape makes it sparkle and allows it to be used in all types of jewelry…rings, pendants, bracelets and earrings

Princess

Princess cut - square shape with sharp, uncut corners. It normally has 76 facets which gives it is brilliance and fire. Although it can be used as a center stone in a ring, it is often used in tennis bracelets, eternity rings and side stones. Since the edges of the stone are straight, they can be laid side to side with no spaces in between for an all-diamond look.

Oval

Oval Cut – a length to width ratio of 1.5:1 is most appealing. They are used as center stones in rings, pendants, and earring studs, or drop earrings.

Heart

Heart Cut – a length to width ratio of 1:1 is best here for a proper shape. Normally cut with 59 facets, they are set commonly in necklaces and rings. Additionally, they are often sold as matched pairs for earring studs.

Pear

Pear Cut – normally it has 58 facets. Due to its shape, it is often used in necklaces or drop earrings, in addition to being set in rings.

Marquise

Marquise – boat-shape with approximately 56 facets. Aesthetically length to width ratios of 1.75:1 and 2:1 are the most appealing. The majority are sold as center diamonds for rings.

Emerald

Emerald cut – this is a step-cut, very different in look from all the above brilliant cuts that sparkle. The look of an emerald cut diamond is clean-cut, tailored and chic. It’s used in rings, pendants and earrings.

Legend & Lore

Legend has it that the marquise cut’s name dates back to the Marquise of Pompadour. It is told that the Sun King wanted a stone to be polished into the shape of the mouth of the Marquise!
