Custom Made Pieces “The Process”

Since a large part of my business is custom-made pieces, I thought you might be interested in understanding the process, step-by-step. Custom pieces can take anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks to complete.

  1. Customer sends a photo of what they would like - and by phone, text or email, communicates any other pertinent details.

  2. The photo is submitted for computer design (CAD)…computer-aided drafting…sketching.

  3. The piece is printed in ‘a wax.’ The wax piece gets casted into the metal of choice – platinum, 18k yellow or white gold, or 14K yellow or white gold.

  4. The metal casting is received by the craftsman. It gets refined, cleaned up and pre-polished. (It is at this point, if the piece is determined by the craftsman not to be acceptable for any reason, that Step 4 gets repeated, followed by Step 5). Once acceptable by the craftsman, we move onto the next step.

  5. The stones (diamonds and colored gemstones) are set by the setter.

  6. The entire piece then gets polished.

  7. The custom-made piece of jewelry is presented to the customer

  8. The final and most gratifying step. The joy of the person when they receive the completed piece.

How did Christmas gifts originate?

For Christians, gift-giving is a symbolic tribute to the Three Wise Men’s gifts honoring the baby Jesus with gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Although Pilgrim forefathers, banned Christmas in its early days, Christmas celebrations became legal in the 1680’s.

By 1867, the holiday gift industry was so vibrant that Macy’s in New York City decided to keep its doors open until midnight on Christmas Eve for the first time.
