Earrings! What should you know?

We’ve finished our year of Birthstones but the journey still continues! Each month we’ll take you somewhere new inspired by color, pieces and areas that I think will be fun for you!

This month we’re talking Earrings!

Whether buying for yourself or someone else here are some areas you should consider!

Earlobes! What size is the earlobe? Depending on the answer, helps you know what size or style earring to buy. There are large earlobes, medium ones, small ones, and some almost non-existent.

For example, you cannot wear large diamond studs or gemstone studs on an earlobe that is too small because they would hang off, instead of laying properly on the lobe.  The same holds true for a gold earring with a motif like a flower, or a shape. If the earlobe is too small, the earring would not hang properly. The size of an earring stud should relate to the size of the earlobe.

If you like ‘huggie’ style hoops, very small ‘huggies’ would not fit on a large earlobe. You would need larger ones. Small earlobes can carry small tight ‘huggies.’

Neck Length! What is the length of the neck from the bottom of the earlobe to the top of the shoulder? Depending on the answer, helps you know if you can wear large hoops or smaller hoops, long drop earrings or shorter drop earrings. A long neck can carry any size hoop or drop earring. A shorter neck cannot. Think about neck length when purchasing hoop or drop earrings!

Lore & Legend.

Ear piercing is one of the oldest known forms of body modification with artistic and written references from cultures around the world dating back to early history. Gold earrings, along with other jewelry made of gold, lapis lazuli, and carnelian were found in the ancient sites. Gold, silver and bronze hoops were popular in the Minoan. Early evidence of earrings worn by men can be seen in archeological evidence from Persepolis and ancient Persia. The carved images of soldiers of the Persian Empire, displayed on some of the surviving walls of the palace, show them wearing an earring.

In Western Europe, earrings became fashionable among English courtiers and gentlemen in the 1590s.

The modern practice of women wearing earrings for fashion really only became prevalent in the US in the 1950’s.
